How Solar Water Heating Works

Collectors on the roof capture heat from the sun and transfer it to pipes filled with food grade antifreeze. A small pump circulates the antifreeze to a heat exchanger where the heat from the antifreeze moves to water circulated from the water heater.

The antifreeze pipes are mated to the water pipes in the heat exchanger. The antifreeze and water never mix, and the water from the plumbing system never circulates to the outside, eliminating frozen pipes.
