start your engines!” |
MONROE, Ga. – The
thunderous roar of motorcycle engines added an exclamation point to perfect
summer’s end weather as 320 riders from across North Georgia gathered
at the sixth annual Walton EMC Charity Ride on September 20.
This
year’s ride benefited Camp Twin
Lakes, a facility where children with
special needs and life challenges can attend camp and “just be normal
kids,” said Stacy Hodges, director of special events at Camp Twin Lakes.
Medical
professionals volunteer to attend camp with campers, relieving parents’ worries
about missing treatments or other healthcare concerns.
“The
accessibility of Camp Twin Lakes makes this camp a godsend for someone with
cerebral palsy,” said Hodges.
“Our
parents don’t have to worry–they know we’re in good hands,” said
Colin LaFon, this year’s honorary ride captain. LaFon, a fifth grader,
has cerebral palsy as a result of being born prematurely.
“Camp
Twin Lakes has allowed me to get out and do cool things that people with
disabilities don’t normally get to do,” continued LaFon. “I
really like that you guys donated money.”
Greg
Brooks, ride emcee and Walton EMC employee explained, “Walton EMC is
a customer-owned electric company. That means we operate by the cooperative
principles, one if which is ‘Concern for community.’ That’s
why we hold events like this.”
After
the scenic ride and a rest stop, motorcyclists returned to Walton EMC headquarters
for a barbeque lunch and drawings for over 100 door prizes. Participants
also received a ride T-shirt with a special commemorative logo.
“I’m proud of the
motorcycling community and what they did here today,” said Brooks. “After
meeting Colin, we’re all sure that this $6,000 is going to a great cause.”
Walton
EMC is a customer-owned power company that serves 118,000 accounts over its
ten-county service area between Atlanta and Athens.
